Accessibility statement for Changing Health

This accessibility statement applies to all programmes delivered on the Changing Health platform.

The purpose of the platform is to provide people with education and tools to help them monitor and improve their health outcomes.

This web platform is run by Changing Health, who are committed to making their website as accessible as possible for persons with visual, hearing, cognitive and motor impairments.

The users are able to:

  • change colours, contrast levels and fonts
  • navigate most of the website using just a keyboard
  • navigate most of the website using speech recognition software
  • navigate most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)

We have also made the website text as simple as possible to understand. My Computer My Way has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • Some navigation items are difficult to use with a keyboard or screen reader
  • Some form elements are difficult to use with a keyboard or screen reader 
  • Some form errors are not communicated to screen reader users
  • Some images don’t have the correct alt information
  • Audio-described videos do not currently display captions
  • Some audio-description on videos overlaps the main video audio
  • Some elements of the website do not adopt user-applied text styling

Navigation and accessing information

  • Calendar navigation buttons and individual step tracking data entries cannot be operated using only the keyboard, and require a pointing device such as a mouse. This fails WCAG 2.1.1 Keyboard. We plan to fix this issue by January 2024.
  • Some text does not meet minimum contrast requirements against the background colour, and may be difficult for some users with vision impairments to read and interpret. This fails WCAG 1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum). We plan to fix this issue by January 2024. 
  • Some placeholder text contrast is insufficient for users with low vision. This fails WCAG 1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum). We plan to fix this issue by January 2024.
  • Some user interface elements such as icons do not have sufficient contrast and, therefore, do not meet minimum contrast requirements. This may be difficult for some users with vision impairments to observe. This fails WCAG 1.4.11 Non-text Contrast. We plan to fix this issue by January 2024. 
  • When a user resizes text to 200%, some page elements are obscured. This fails WCAG 1.4.4 Resize text. We plan to fix this issue by January 2024.
  • Expanding controls are not accessible to people who use screen readers. This fails WCAG 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value. We plan to fix this issue by January 2024.
  • Time input fields to not have appropriate name, role or value. This fails WCAG 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value. We plan to fix this issue by January 2024.
  • Some aria labels are used in a way that makes the function of a button unclear to screen reader users. This fails WCAG 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value. We plan to fix this issue by January 2024.  
  • On the Learn Journey progress bar and Step Tracker tool, some information is being conveyed on the page using only colour. People who cannot perceive differences in colour may not understand the context or purpose of the information. This fails WCAG 1.4.1 Use of Color. We plan to fix this issue by January 2024.
  • The custom focus indicator on some active components does not meet minimum contrast requirements. This fails WCAG 1.4.11 Non-text Contrast and 2.4.7 Focus Visible. We plan to fix this issue by January 2024. 
  • Some content becomes lost or obscured at low resolutions or when scrolling in two directions is required. This fails WCAG 1.4.10 Reflow. We plan to fix this issue by January 2024.
  • The focus order for items on the Tools page is not logical, which adds extra steps to the screen reader user’s experience. This fails WCAG 2.4.3 Focus Order. We plan to fix this issue by January 2024.
  • The wording of the button to display audio described videos is not clear. This fails WCAG 3.3.2 Labels or Instructions and 4.1.2 Name, Role, Value. We plan to fix this issue by January 2024.
  • Some page titles do not accurately describe the page’s purpose. This fails WCAG 2.4.2 Page Titled. We plan to fix this issue by January 2024.

Error handling

  • In some cases when a form is submitted, screen reader users are not made aware when an error has occurred on the page. This fails WCAG 3.3.1 Error Identification, 3.3.3 Error Suggestion, and 4.1.3 Status Messages. We plan to fix this issue by January 2024.

Forms

  • Some form fields do not have clear and programmatically associated form labels, which may cause problems for screen reader users. This fails WCAG 1.3.1 Info and Relationships, 2.4.6 Headings and Labels, and 3.3.2 Labels or Instructions and. We plan to fix this issue by January 2024.
  • Some groups of radio buttons are not correctly labelled, which may prevent screen reader users from making a correct choice. This fails WCAG 1.3.1 Info and Relationships, 2.4.6 Headings and Labels, and 3.3.2 Labels or Instructions and. We plan to fix this issue by January 2024.

Images

  • The blank profile image on the My Profile page lacks appropriate alt text. This fails WCAG 1.1.1 Non-text Content. We plan to fix this issue by January 2024.
  • The topic images on the ‘Find answers’ section should have blank alt attributes, as they are decorative only. This fails WCAG 1.1.1 Non-text Content. We plan to fix this issue by January 2024.

Videos

  • Audio-described videos should have captions. This fails WCAG 1.2.2 Captions (Prerecorded). We plan to fix this issue by January 2024.
  • Some audio description overlaps the main video audio track. This fails WCAG 1.2.3 Audio Description or Media Alternative (Prerecorded) and 1.2.5 Audio Description (Prerecorded). We plan to fix this issue by March 2024.
  • The audio description buttons acts as, but is not styled as, a button. This fails WCAG 3.2.3 Consistent Navigation and 3.2.4 Consistent Identification. We plan to fix this issue by January 2024.

Parsing

  • Some of the code contains errors which may cause the page to be read incorrectly or not as intended. This fails WCAG 4.1.1 Parsing. We plan to fix this issue by January 2024.

Adaptability

  • When text style properties are changed by the user, they are not applied to quizzes. This fails WCAG 1.4.12 Text Spacing. We plan to fix this issue by March 2024. 

Disproportionate burden

We do not consider any of the outstanding accessibility issues to be a disproportionate burden at this time.

What we’re doing to improve accessibility

We are doing the following to improve the accessibility of our website:

  • We have conducted an external audit to evaluate the current state of our online platform.
  • We have had accessibility training to better understand existing accessibility issues that are currently present on our online platform.
